08-07-2010 IV Workshop on Robotic Telescopes in Spain 2010 - WTR2010 Paterna, Valencia, from 25 to 27 November 2010

1. OBJECTIVE OF THE CONGRESS

Organized by the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Valencia, the Congress on Robotic Telescopes in Spain will take place 25, 26 and 27 November 2010 at the University of Valencia Science Park. This congress continues along the line established by the three previous congresses (Huelva 2004, Barcelona 2006 and Madrid 2009), aiming to foster collaboration among researchers, technologists, educators, and those keen on promoting scientific knowledge in general, and that of astronomy in particular, in the context of the enormous potential supposed by the use of robotic telescopes.

The objective of WTR2010 is to bring together in a single event scientists, engineers, educators, amateurs, and companies that employ robotic telescopes in their research, educational, informative, and commercial activities. Special emphasis will be placed on education and the dissemination of astronomy, both in the classroom and in any other cultural or social forum. The congress pursues the exchange of experiences among the researchers who employ robotic telescopes, the technologists who develop and build them, educators who use astronomy in their teaching activities, and the astronomical associations that utilize, or are interested in utilizing, robotic telescopes.

Although the WTR2010 is a national congress, guests from other countries will participate and present their experiences using robotic telescopes in the fields of education, dissemination, technology, and science.

The language of the congress will be Spanish, although some of the presentations by foreign guests will be in English.

2. PLACE AND DATE

The sessions of the congress will take place 25 and 26 November 2010 in the auditorium of the University of Valencia Science Park (http://www.pcuv.es/es/index.html); Calle Catedrático José Beltrán 2, Paterna, Valencia. The UV Science Park is easily reached from the centre of Valencia via public transport (metro-tram). It is also only a few minutes from the Manises airport.

27 November will be spent visiting (optional) the Observatory of the University of Valencia in Aras de los Olmos.

3. SUBJECTS

The congress will be organized into four sessions, each of which will include one or two guest speakers and papers selected from among the proposals by participants. The selection of papers will be decided by SOC according to the time available. Papers not selected can be presented as posters. Participants can also directly propose their papers as posters. Papers and posters will be published in the congress minutes.

The sessions of the congress are:
1. SCIENCE
2. TECHNOLOGY
3. EDUCATION
4. DISSEMINATION

SESSION 1. SCIENCE:
Directed at scientists and researchers who habitually work with robotic telescopes, teleoperated or automatic, to carry out their research.

SESSION 2. TECHNOLOGY:
Directed at researchers, engineers, astronomical companies and associations that have built instrumentation, control hardware or software for robotic observatories and/or for some of their components such as mounts, cameras, motorized domes, focusing systems, meteorological stations, and other automatic subsystems that can be remote operated via the Internet or ubiquitous devices.

SESSION 3. EDUCATION:
Directed mainly, though not exclusively, at teachers of primary and secondary school, university professors, and astronomical associations that do or want to do educational activities about astronomy, that employ or are interested in employing astronomy, directly or in order to teach related sciences (physics, math, geodesy, etc.) in their classes. Papers will be both theoretical and practical, aimed at discovering and discussing what contents are benefited by astronomical resources accessible online, in particular the contributions of robotic telescopes, and what methodologies could be applied in the teaching of these contents. Experiences in the utilization of Internet resources and robotic telescopes already available for teaching will be shared. During the session a remote observation with the radio telescope of the project PARTNeR will be conducted.

SESSION 4. DISSEMINATION:
Directed at astronomical associations; amateurs; centres of scientific dissemination such as museums and planetariums; researchers; and teachers who work on projects of astronomical dissemination, employ Internet resources and/or robotic observatories, with the aim of presenting their activities.
During the session a remote observation with various optical telescopes will be conducted.

DATES TO REMEMBER
Deadline to register for the congress: registration open until full
Deadline to send summaries of spoken contributions and posters: 30 September 2010
Notification of acceptance: 20 October 2010

REGISTRATION
Registration for the congress is free. Registration does not include maintenance or accommodations. Registration and proposal of papers are done through the website of the congress (http://www.uv.es/wtr2010). The relevant forms will be available soon.

For teachers of primary and secondary education, attendance at the congress will constitute a formative activity certified by CEFIRE of Valencia.
