Introduction

UBE has been present in Europe for nearly 50 years, being one of the most important industrial groups in the region.  UBE Corporation Europe has several product lines, such as caprolactam (raw material for nylon or polyamide 6), ammonium sulfate and UBESOL 45, a widely used granular fertilizer, 1,6-Hexanediol, 1,5-Pentanediol, Polycarbonate-diols and they sell other fine chemicals.  They manufacture Polyamide 6,12 and Copolyamides, used in the production of film for food packaging, monofilaments, automotive components and engineering products for consumption.

INNOVATIVE ASPECTS

  • In the synthesis of polyurethanes, the polyols traditionally used are generally polyesters (PES) and polyethers (PET).  Recently a new class of polyols, based on polycarbonate groups (PCD), has been introduced into the market, which greatly improves the final properties of the final polyurethane, such as resistance to hydrolysis, heat and weather conditions.

  • The origin of these benefits is the PU based on PCD, compared to PU-PES and PU-PET, which is due to the presence of the carbonate group in the polymer.  This group is much more resistent against hydrolysis than the ester group, and also has greater stability against UV radiation and high temperatures, giving rise to greater stability to PU-PCD compared to those of analogous PU-PET.
